Fleeters Beware: How to Tell if your Sailor is a Real or a Fake

We are currently in the midst of

Fleet Week 2009

It is shaping up to look like a wet and wild (thunderstorms are a brewin') three-day weekend and the sailors are on the town and fleeting through all the hotspots, bars and streets that they can lay their hands on!

However, just because that lad or lassie is in a cute, little, white suit or military garb doesn't mean they're for real. It may not be widely known, but right before Fleet Week, costume stores tend to sell and rent out all their sailor gear. Let's just say that some people might be interested in getting in on the copious amount of presumed "tail" sailors can partake of this week.

But wait Fleeters!

I've complied some PRACTICAL TIPS to finding out if your Sailor is the REAL DEAL (A little knowhow goes a long way...).

TIP #1: Actually know what a sailor looks like. I know this sounds like "Duh!," but while some sailors look like they've stepped off the set of On the Town, some don't. You don't want to question a sailor's true authenticity without some backup knowhow.

TIP #2: Order a round (and in case you're wonderin', you're buyin'. These individuals serve our country. They deserve a drink or more on you. It's your duty.) and cheers to the unofficial motto of the U.S. Navy, "Non sibi sed patriae" (Not self but country). If your sailor looks like a deer caught in the headlights, throw that fish back.

TIP #3: Say to your sailor that you heard another sailor singing a song about "Anchors or something..." If she starts singing or mentions the song "Anchors Aweigh," the unofficial service song of the Navy, she's a good fish.

TIP #4: If a sailor says he is an Admiral and looks under the age of old, dump him. That's a 4 Star rank and is attained through a life of service to our country.

TIP #5: Browse through this Glossary of U.S. Navy Slang. Yes, alot of the slang is derogatory, but this is no big surprise. However, it is useful to know. For instance, if another sailor says that the sailor you're hitting on is a "Hot Dog" (A sexually active male sailor), at least you know what you're getting into.

TIP #6: Not to state the obvious, but if you are going to partake in some tail, WRAP IT UP! Click here for a list where you can score some FREE NYC Condoms (and lube!).

The Philanthropist: The 2-for-1 Review

Sometimes there is a reason something is 2-for-1.

Such was the case with The Philanthropist.

When entering the American Airlines Theatre for a night of Broadway frivolities, my party of four was quite happy to join me as the tickets were cheap to begin with and two-for-one to boot. However, they were more than a bit less joyful when we left. Further, they were even less amused when they found out that my seatmate had been surreptitiously passing me M&Ms and I had been hoarding them to myself. Not only had I made this social faux pas, but when I finally was successful in secretly opening my bottle of Fuel: The 7 Hour Energy Shot (in my pocket for most of the second half of the play; I got skills...) and fake yawned to take a swig, I did not share this either, even though my guests were nodding off around me. Of course, by the time I was able to consume said bottle the play ended five minutes later, hence why I am awake now writing this musing.

But I meander....(kind of like the play).....

The Philanthropist is a play about a British English professor in the Seventies during (I guess?) a few days in his life...when things happen. If you want something deeper than that you should probably ask the playwright (or an English Professor), because that's all I got out of it.

To begin with, the characters spent far too great of time in the discussion of rhetoric, such as hyperboles and anagrams. The only time my ears perked was during a digression regarding cunnilingus and even then the subject was not dissected to my full satisfaction. The highlight of the play was when a gentleman in the audience a few rows ahead of us found something mundanely funny and chuckled so loud and boisterously that we couldn't stop our tittering for a full two minutes.

Further, I think the philanthropic thing would be for the Theatre to hand out free flasks of sherry or scotch for the audience to slowly swirl in their mouths during the play (at least it would entertain most of them). This play, like scotch, is best enjoyed after a full dinner, when one is relaxed and would rather leave the talking (and quite possibly the listening ) to someone else and quite frankly, is a bit in the bag (like the gentleman a few rows ahead of us).

Overall, it was not, how shall we say this...my cup of tea.

However, one thing I've learned from life is that the more disagreeable something is the more likely you are to encounter it. This will be the case when I accompany my tourist guests to what I advertised to them as “Ferris Bueller on Broadway” with non-refundable tickets to this play this coming Saturday. However, this time I won't worry about having that extra glass of wine at dinner and I won't forget my flask (and maybe a few more to share).

NOTE: There is no notice in the theater, but within the first ten minutes something quite violent happens that includes brain/blood splatter on the white wall behind one of the actors (you can let your mind meander). Therefore, anyone who cares not to see this, should turn their head away.

Since the days of old (well, actually in this instance 1973) street fairs have been a way for local vendors to hock their wares everything from a fresh chicken (with it's head just cut off) to a pint of Mead.

Nowadays things are a bit different, but not completely so. You can still get street meat (fully cooked, of course), but there are also offerings of suckling pig and quail stuffed with fresh Greek spices and feta cheese, mango barbecue wings, and jambalaya. Well, at least at this delectable street fair.

Welcome to a day of amazing food, fun and frivolity (and of course, the regular funnel cake and I LOVE NY T-Shirt vendors). There will also be live music and performances scattered throughout the festival (from Irish maidens to belly dancers).

Bryant Park Summer Movies in the Park: Films Just Announced!

For all of you following bryantparknyc on Twitter, you not only got clues to guess the films for the 2009 HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival the last few days, but found out hours ago what the new films were before the titles were released on the Bryant Park Website.

So what is the Bryant Park Summer Film Festival?

The BPFilm Fest is FREE Outdoor Classic Movie Screenings in Bryant Park every Monday night during the summer (starting June 15th and ending August 17th). The lawn opens at 5PM for picnicking and the films start at dusk (usually 8 or 9pm).

So dust off your blanket and your picnic basket, rouse up some friends (and a couple of bottles of 3 Buck Chuck, even though technically alcohol isn't allowed in the Park) and make sure to spend your Monday Evenings this Summer watching FREE Movies in the middle of Manhattan. Trust me. It's an experience you will never forget!

Yes, it's true.

United States Postal Service has increased the price of postage stamps AGAIN.

After the 1cent increase in 2008 from 41c to 42c, the price of stamps has risen again. However, this time it is a 2c increase from 42c to

44¢.

From here on out, I recommend ONLY buying the Forever Stamps. These stamps are valid, well, FOREVER. That way you will never send out a bill or letter and have it sent back for insufficient postage. Plus, it looks like there will be another postage increase next year.

Hello gentle Americans. Since I have decided to run for RuPaul’s DRAG RACE I have had so much lovely support and the occasional reaction of bewilderment. “Why Hedda with your fame and notoriety would enter the competition? Can’t you leave it for the less well known gals?” I understand where they are coming from and I have actually asked myself the same question. Though I have asked it while soaking in tub of bubbles, my green hair wrapped in an Egyptian cotton towel, while sipping on a glass of champagne as some young stud paints my toenails. And do you know the answer I came up with? “I love drag and all it has offered me over the years and why not celebrate my love for drag with the rest of the world?” Show the skeptics, the naysayers, the perverts, the fans, the enemies and the chaste that Hedda’s still got it.” Not the clap assholes, I’ve got what it takes to be household name. And frankly I don’t want to do it by being on COPS so Drag Race is a natural choice. Though now that I think about it being thrown over the warm hood of a cop car by a burly man in blue sounds quite appetizing. Hmm, what crime could I commit that would cause a stir? I could smuggle drugs in my ass and try to cross the boarder? Instead of drug mule I would be a drag mule, now ain’t that a kick?

This morning the Cheap Chic took Lexisworks (who is visiting from CO and a cheap chic herself) all the way up to East Harlem (on a Sunday morning, at 10am) to the Museum of the City of New York. As I stated in a previous post, on Sundays from 10am-12pm, the Museum has FREE admission. Plus, it's a fabulous museum to share with out-of-town visitors as it has some great exhibitions on NYC and really just in general.

However, when we went to collect our tickets this morning we were informed that...

The Museum of the City of New York

NO LONGER HAS FREE ADMISSION ON SUNDAYS.

When I asked the Admissions employee when this change took affect and he said he just found out THIS MORNING when he came on his shift.

Now I know times are hard, especially for museums in this economy, but not having free admission for (a measly) 2 HOURS a week (on a Sunday, no less) AND not updating this information on their website (especially since I checked the website right before leaving to catch the subway)??

Additionally, ADULT ADMISSION INCREASED to $10 per adult
(also not updated on their website).

NOT COOL. SO NOT COOL.

Shame on the Museum of the City of New York. At least they should have updated their website before making the change. And maybe switching the policy to Pay-What-You-Wish on Sundays??? Just a thought...

Yes, it's true.

Even the Cheap Chic has gotten swept up in the opening of TOPSHOP in the US hullabaloo. No, she will not be one of the hundreds of twentysomething fashionistas lining up this morning (and I guess last night) to be at the 11AM unveiling of 4 Floors and 40000 square feet of UK's version of HM, albeit with clothing "designer" Kate Moss in tow.

However, I, the Cheap Chic decide to look into this culture phenomenon to see if it really is the sheek (but cheap) option for looking stylish on a budget...

Here's what I found:

Hair Accessories (From $10 to $25. Verdict: My hair ain't worth it.)

Skinny Jeans (Their flagship product- From $60 to $100. Verdict: More pricey than H&M, but not bad.)

Sun Dresses ($55 to $80. Verdict: I would have the dress, but no money for sunscreen.)

T Shirts ($28 to over $100. Verdict: I don't get it. It's a T-Shirt...and what is a slash tee?)

SALE: Satin Velcro Sandal (Was $135, Now $60. Verdict: Welcome Back, 1982.)

OVERALL VERDICT:

Even on SALE this just ain't the Cheap Chic style for a variety of reasons.

I'm a Midwestern gal (e.g. Kate Moss ain't got nothing on these curves.).

28 dollars on a T-Shirt? 55 on a Sun Dress? 10 bucks on a hair accessory? Need I say more?

It's Trendy and Hip (e.g. one season wear ONLY and that season was in 1992.).

Even if I was to go for these prices, I'll go American.

As Mayor Bloomberg put it yesterday (not that he ever takes the subway):

"When you see what's going to happen to your commuting costs, you should call your state legislators and say, 'I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore.'"

Here's the lowdown on MTA Subway & Bus Service in the 5 Buroughs

On New York City subways and buses, single rides would go from $2 to $2.50. A one-day unlimited MetroCard would go from $7.50 to $9.50. A seven-day unlimited MetroCard would go from $25 to $31. A 14-day unlimited MetroCard would go from $47 to $59. A 30-day unlimited MetroCard would go from $81 to $103.

Also be prepared for eliminated or reduce service on 6 subway lines. 20% more crowded trains (if that was even possible on the 4 &5 Lex Express during the morning rush hour). And 3,000 job layoffs (so even former MTA employees won't be able to afford the subway).

Final Note: Budgetary concerns have the MTA scaling back on the Second Ave subway project by removing a plan to add a third track in case of a subway delay, trains could bypass the delay and the trains would move along as scheduled. The rub is that redesigning the 2nd Ave subway project without the 3rd track is going to cost 26 MILLION DOLLARS, even though it will save 90 million, but lead to delays! Ridiculous! Delays and 26 MILLION DOLLARS down.

Weekend Guide: Princeton Art Museum

So, I know it's only Monday, but anyone who doesn't start their week looking forward to the next weekend obviously doesn't find much enjoyment in going to brunch with your favorite lush, getting more than a bit tipsy on unlimited Mimosas and then spending the rest of your collective afternoon watching the Real Housewives of New York marathon on Bravo. I mean, really. Who doesn't live for a weekend like that?

But, I digress....

For all you City weary New Yorkers who want to take a day trip out of the hustle and bustle (and the unlimited mimosa brunch culture) and see some FREE Masterpieces (i.e. actually get some culture), I recommend taking the NJ transit and heading to the Princeton University Art Museum located in Princeton, New Jersey (Yes, yes. I know I just mentioned heading to Jersey, but its not that bad. This isn't the place where Tony buries the bodies. It's too posh for that.).

The campus itself is gorgeous and full of Gothic architecture. Walking around this campus makes one feel quite regal among its grandeur (well until you see the freshmen sauntering around in their jimjams). Then you come across what would be considered a benign building if it didn't have a bunch of headless walking sculptures in front of it, the Princeton University Art Museum. Once inside there is a variety of art, from European to Contemporary to Asian and even some beautiful mosaics. For a University art museum it is quite encompassing. Plus, its art for FREE!

Last Monday, I had a dentist appointment. I loathe the dentist to the point that I have to consciously restrain myself from not biting the hygienist's fingers off by very politely gripping my hands on my lap and mantra-ing "I will not bite the hygienist. So, I, the Cheap Chic, have a confession. I'm a recovering Barbie addict. When I was a girl (up until...) I was obsessed with Barbie. Of course, coming from two households, 1/2 of my Barbie stuff was new and 1/2 was Garage Sale Retro. Thousands of hours were spent dressing Barbie up, having her make out with 70's, bob-cut hair Ken and making her sass around in her blinding, neon pink limo (with jacuzzi of course, "oolala you, sassalicious Barbie, you").

Lately, Barbie has been getting around..in the news that is.

"Why?" you, my curious reader, may ask.

The Cheap Chic's Guide to Travel: Megabus

A British 'transportation on the cheap' import, Megabus is one of newest carriers to offer bus service from NYC to smAlbany, NY. While Megabus has limited service to Albany (4 departures & 4 arrivals per day) it beats out its competitors in many arenas.

First, Megabus has the fabled $1 fare on each bus. That means you could be the lucky individual who gets round trip transportation for only $2.50 (50c for a service fee). That's cheaper than a latte at Starbucks! Other fares start on a sliding scale from $5 all the way up to $30 (one way). Still with Amtrak's service to Albany averaging around $100 roundtrip, the $60 roundtrip Megabus fare ain't to shabby.

Second, Megabus has FREE WiFi on some of their buses, although on my trip, the WiFi was inconsistent at best (but it's the thought that counts). About an hour into my first leg of my roundtrip Albany ride, the WiFi vanished and on the way back to NYC, even though everyone on the bus could pick up the WiFi signal, no one could connect to it. However, some routes have no problem at all with connectability.

Third, in the Northeastern region, Megabus also services Boston, D.C., Philadelphia, Baltimore, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Niagara Falls, ON & Toronto. For the more traveled (or longer) routes you may be lucky enough to get one of their new double-decker buses which have electric plugs on the backs of the seats for electronics (such as your laptop).

Overall, its transportation and its cheap.

My recommendation is stay out of the bathroom (unless you want blue toilet water splashed on your bum and unsanitized hands from the empty Hand Sanitizer bottle, if it's even there) and you'll get there in one piece.

I mean, what do you want for nothing? A rubber biscuit?

WEEKEND GUIDE: Fountain Art Fair!

This weekend by the NYC Hudson River Piers is the annual Armory Show: International Fair of New Art. This art extravaganza showcases the best in contemporary art from all over the world. Of course, to view this high end art there comes a price. A single day ticket is $30 ($10 for students, how I wish I still were one) and a 4 day pass is $60! That's a pretty hefty price.

However, for those of you who still want to get their "art" on, but Cheap Chic style, check out The Fountain Art Fair. This fair "is a guerrilla-style art event – under the radar, independent and highly influential – where young, Brooklyn-based galleries showcase fresh work without official booth spaces or selection committee juries. Launched in New York March 2006, Fountain is designed to create leverage and support for independent galleries overlooked by the larger, corporate-sponsored art fairs." It sounds exactly like the sort of event a rabble-rouser like me would enjoy (that is if I am not overrun by Hipsters! Eek!). Best of all an ALL WEEKEND PASS is only a $5 suggested donation!

Also tonight you can party to your heart's content and meet the artists from 7pm-11pm. MC Chris will be performing at 11pm.

Art and the Sex Doll

Last year, I fell in love with an endearing movie about a man who had a relationship with...well...a sex doll. While, the film, Lars and the Real Girl, was one of fiction, I always wondered if there was someone in this world who fashioned their life in a such a way. Well, guess what? There is.

Now exhibiting at the hpgrp gallery in NYC is a new photography series by Becky Yee entitled More Than a Woman. This somewhat voyeuristic exhibition invites the viewer into the life of a technically single (albeit "married in his mind") computer engineer who lives outside of Tokyo with his harem of Dutch wives (e.g. sex dolls). The photographs invoke questions about society's conceptions on intimacy, loyalty and relationships.

Is is possible for an inanimate object to be loyal?
Does one need a human connection to form intimacy?
Are relationships about real interactions between people
or can they exist solely in one's own mind?

"My ladies are always there for me," he said. "They never talk back, they are completely loyal, and if I get bored, I can just change the head." (Being the NYC dating scene, this doesn't sound half bad to me!)

The Perils...of "Doing Your Own Damn Laundry"...The Conclusion

Last night, as I was finishing the last blog post, I remembered that I still needed to get the tempestuous laundry from the 4th Floor.

I trudged up to the laundry room and saw that my wet clothes had been put in my basket from by another tenant (Quite nicely, I might add.). As I heaved the basket to the dryer, I saw that there was a piece of paper stuck on the inside of my basket. I unfolded it and read, "You left valuables in the laundry. I didn't want to leave it here. 6K- Up all night."

And that's when I realized that I was listening to music before all this hulabaloo happened.....

Hence....I raced up to the 6th floor and retrieved the object I had mistakenly sent through the soap, suds, and spin cycle.

Surprisely, I figured my iTouch was gone for good, but after letting it dry on the radiator all night, I am now the owner of freshly laundered and cootie-free iTouch, albeit with a slightly waterlogged looking screen (but still touch-sensitive!).

The lessons learned from this are:

Doing your own laundry may be tedious, but it certainly is never boring.
Never do laundry when you not only ate Ditz Flakes for breakfast, but then consumed copious amounts of prescription medication to cure your swamp cold you acquired at Mardi Gras.
You can machine wash an iTouch.

Tonight, I, The Cheap Chic, vowed to get my life back in order. First on the list, laundry.

"Why laundry?" you, my gentle reader, may inquire.

Well, I still hadn't unpacked by bag from Mardi Gras. I know, I know. It's a week since I've been back, but I actually was considering just handing over my rucksack to the Hazmat team, but I'm too cheap to replace all my clothes. Plus, then I would have to give up my precious, precious beads.....

Anyway, feeling like Karen Carpenter singing, "I'm on the top of the World, looking down on Creation...." for the first time since I got my swamp cold, I decided to start my laundry as soon as I got home from work. With my 1st laundry basket in hand, my iPod wailing Italian Baroque (I know. I'm such a laundry badass), I headed down to the first floor to begin. I added $20 to my laundry card, put in two loads, and headed back to my apartment on the second floor to pick up the 2nd basket. Then I headed up to the 4th floor with my 2nd basket to start two more loads (This is actually a Math word problem. What floor is The Cheap Chic actually on?).

Once in the 4th floor laundry room, I took out my laundry card and my two laundry detergents, tossed them on the top of the washers, and started loading my stuff into the washers. When I finished loading, I straightened back up and reached for my laundry card....but it wasn't there.

"Did I mistake having it in the first place?" I thought. "Did I drop it while talking to my Super in the elevator? Did I leave it in the apartment? Did I forget to clean out the lint trap the last time I did laundry and now I have bad laundry karma?" (It's funny how when you lose something, even though you swear you had it in the first place, you think of tons of different scenarios than the one that actually happen.) Thus, the search began.

I retraced my steps, gazing at the black and white checkerboard hallway tile floor (getting slightly dizzy) looking for my laundry card. Then I hit the elevator button, hoping maybe it was in the elevator. The left elevator opened and my Super stood there. "Did I drop my laundry card?" I queried. He just gazed at me like I was stupid. "You were in the other elevator," he said looking at me like I'm an idiot for forgetting what elevator I was in just 5 minutes ago. The doors closed and I hit the button again. The right elevator lifted, the doors opened, I looked down on the black non-skid mat and....nothing.

So I went for it. In my desperation, I had the audacity and tenacity to pick up the bottom of the mat and look underneath. Not only was this hazardous to my health (being that the mat had the streets of New York times 200 over all it), but it was ludicrous to believe that the laundry card could have managed to fall out of my basket and underneath the mat. But, what can I say? Desperate times called for desperate measures.

See, one downfall of being the Cheap Chic is that $20 is ALOT of money. It is 80 packages of Ramen, 10 trips to the bar for $1 Beers (tip included) at the Underground during Happy Hour and food cart lunches for a week. Plus, it was my last $20 and of course I didn't have any $5s or $10s, which are the only other bills the laundry card machine takes. Added to that, to buy a new laundry card from the machine is $5 itself. Its a freakin' laundry racket! Where are the RICO Laundry laws when you need them!!!

Alas, I dragged myself through the building for one last search. My apartment-nothing. Two different laundry rooms-nothing. All the checkerboard tiled hallways of three floors of my apartment building and....nothing.

At this point, I had already started washing clothes on the 2nd Floor and now had no way to dry them. However, there was nothing I could do about it. I guess that's what shower rods, backs of chairs, tops of doors and ledges are for. I said the Serenity Prayer and trudged up to the 4th floor where I was going to collect my 2nd basket of dirty laundry that started this whole debacle.

And that's when it hit me. In the laundry room, there are three large capacity washers side by side and what if......

Well! Wha'dYa Know? (Obviously, not much)

Afterall, it took me 20 minutes to figure out that my laundry card was stuck between two large-capacity washers. I was instantly elated and back to feeling like Karen Carpenter.

"No worries!" I thought. "I am the Cheap Chic. I can get my laundry card out between the two, 60lbs a piece, large-capacity washers lickitty split." (yeah, right.)

I thought back to my Girl Scout days (you know, camping, fire, nature stuff, etc...) and then I dismissed them (I was more Troop Beverly Hills. All we did is make Gingerbread houses and teach Brownies how to Polka. Seriously, the Polka. It was "West-con-sin" afterall).

Then I thought back to my Singleton Survival Training (Mandatory for all Singletons. It involves various covert activities I'm not at liberty to discuss, along with frequent viewings of Bridget Jones' Diary.).

I quickly ran back down to my apartment. I hurried into the kitchen and grabbed the biggest Chef's knife I could find (6 inches of pure steel) along with my Marie Callender Pie Cutter/TakerOutter thingy (You can tell I use it alot). Next, I went to the linen closet and grabbed a kitchen towel (Do you really think I'm stupid enough to run around my apartment building with a knife? I don't want to get evicted! Plus, a gun beats a knife any day and I don't want to find out which neighbor has one.). On my way out I grabbed the postcard my rents sent me from Hawaii, because afterall it was cardstock and I always found cardstock to be handy in any situation (However, in this one, it was not).

I gently scampered up to the 4th floor, via the stairs as I was less likely to run into any neighbors this way (Afterall, I did have a ginormous knife and a Pie Cutter/TakerOutter thingy in my hand). I knew I had to make it fast. If the Super found me trying to jimmy anything out around these washers there will be hell to pay, especially with my makeshift tools.

I got to the laundry room and laid out my surgery kit on top of the washers. The laundry card was about 3 inches down from the top of the washers. I gently caressed my chef's knife and my Pie Cutter/TakerOutter thingy in line with both sides of the laundry card and started to ever...so...gently pull the card up. It moved a half of an inch, then another half of an inch, yet another fourth of an inch and...SWISH! It fell down into the abyss between the washers.

Instantly, my mantra went off in my head (the one I usually use, along with the Serenity Prayer, for my Subway commute so I don't accidentally push one of the many jackasses on the tracks.). "Breathe deep, seek peace. Breathe deep, seek peace, Breathe deep, seek...." Another deep breath and on to plan B.

I bent down on my haunches and looked under the washer. There is only an eighth of an inch gap between the washer and the floor so I saw...nothing. I got up, bent over again and pulled the washer up. As I struggled to hold the washer up, I looked and what I saw was...the washer. I couldn't hold the washer and look under it at the same time (I can't be at two places at once). "DammnnniiiiittttalllllltoHellllllllll!" I growled and growled. "Where is a Ross when you need one!" (Or at least some East German laundry detergent. Did you really think I could make it through this story without a FRIENDS reference?). Having given up some of my two favorite stress relievers for Lent I knew I was on the verge of nervous breakdown.

Then I got an idea. An awful idea. The Cheap Chic got a wonderful, awful idea.

Sitting before me were two bottles of laundry detergent; one full and one I had just used up. I took the bottle that was full, thought better of it, then took the bottle that was empty and placed it side down next to the washer. Then I bent over again, lifted up the washer and managed to finagle my leg to kick the bottle under the washer and put the washer down. Eureka! The washer was now jacked up on the laundry bottle. Death to physics! Yippie to The Cheap Chic!

Then got down on the laundry floor and....there was my laundry card- fully intact with no scratches on it. Even the chip (which is the brains of the card that makes everything run) was pristine. I grabbed it and kissed it (Yes. Even though it had been underneath the washers.). And I am not discussing what else was underneath there. I've blocked that image from my memory.

When I put my laundry card in the slot to start the long awaited two loads of laundry, the 20 bucks was still on it. And all it took was 30 minutes, a Chef's knife, a Pie Cutter/TakerOutter thingy, a postcard, a mantra, the Serenity Prayer and a back ache for the rest of the week.

So, the moral of the story is this. Screw everything I said in Do Your Own Damn Laundry!. Doing your own laundry sucks, majorly. You live in New York. Send it out!

Okay. Just kidding.

The moral of the story actually is...Ingenuity, My Dear Watson. That is how The Cheap One survives in this City. Pure ingenuity and maybe..."Brother, could you spare 3 Bucks for a bottle of Chuck? After this, I think drinking the bottle and watching Abbott and Costello is the only movement I'm going to make the rest of the night (And maybe laying on a heating pad.).

This means if I ever get out of the perpetual Big Easy debauchery long enough, I will send you some notes on how you can live it up. The Cheap Chic's Guide to your very own

Liquid Dinner Party

I love, love, love to socialize with my friends and entertain. However, a five course Dinner at Eight every/other week can be a little taxing on the budget. Thus, I came up with the idea of the Liquid Dinner Party.

To start, it is BYOW, B or L, 3 Buck Chuck is usually the drink of choice.

Second, appetizers (if you thus choose) should be anything that is on sale (usually stuffed grape leaves in my area- $6 for 4lbs!) or inexpensive to make (hummus with pita or feta mixed with freshly chopped basil and a dash of balsamic vinegar on top of Triskets) and don't go overboard! Think of your appets as an amuse-bouche just to show your guests that you aren't going to poison them with your cooking.

Next, the main course. After years of missing out on dinner parties, because I was stuck in the kitchen preparing the next course, I learned an important lesson (actually, it comes from the Boy Scouts)- BE PREPARED! Thus, I can have a dinner party at 6:30pm, when I get home at 6pm on a Friday. "How Cheap Chic?" you inquire. You make...SOUP! It can be prepared ahead of time, freezes easily and comes to a boil in less than 15 min, even when frozen. Thus, freeing you up from a hot stove and letting you enjoy being the HOST(ESS) with the MOST(ESS)!

Now, there are many soup recipes in cookbooks at the library, on the internet, or maybe that you have. From a basic Chicken Noodle to a New Orleans Gumbo to an Armenian Apricot Soup the variations are endless. However, I have two standbys that I swear by. The first is a Mexican Tomato Lime Soup from the Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home Cookbook (you can also find this recipe online, but I'm a big fan of cookbooks, so I'm linking you to the actual book). If you want to cheat or tomatoes are out of season, I've also made this recipe with 2 cups of canned tomatoes instead of fresh ones. The second one is a much heartier soup, actually a stew, perfect for winter. This one is a Groundnut Stew, which has many variations depending on the location in West Africa. Below is the Cheap Chic version which is a mixture of my friend Sam's version (Thanks Sam!) and of tried and true testing on unsuspecting guests.

Groundnut Stew
(Cheap Chic Style)

Ingredients:

oil (peanut or vegetable)
couscous
pressed garlic cloves (I like at least 4)
1/2 tbsp pressed fresh ginger (optional)
2-cups chopped onion
2-16oz cans chopped tomatoes, undrained
2-16oz cans of black beans
2 cups hard veggie (carrots, okra, yams or all)
1/2 cup peanut butter
cayenne pepper to taste
salt and pepper to taste

Heat oil in a soup pot. Saute garlic (and ginger if chosen). Add onions and saute till slightly browned. Add both cans of chopped tomatoes, black beans and veggies. Once everything becomes hot and mixes together, add peanut butter and cayenne to taste. Soup is done. Cover and let cool. Put pot in fridge if serving within a day or in freezable tupperware if freezing. 15 minutes before entertaining: Cook couscous as directed. Put soup on to de-thaw or bring to warmth. Simmer. In a bowl, put the couscous in and top with the stew. Add salt and pepper to taste. The aroma of this stew is great and sure to bring your guests back for seconds. And really this soup is all about the personal touch so feel free to play around with the ingredients.

You always have that one friend that insists on bring something to help with the cooking. If you need no last minute "Oops, I forgot that" ingredient ask them to bring 1 or 2 loaves of French bread. It's cheap (maybe 3 bucks max and they've felt like they've done their part).

"What's the bread for?" you may ask. For making Homemade Garlic Bread (you have to have something to soak up all the liquid)! "But Cheap Chic, I usually buy Pre-made Garlic Bread." This is a big "Hell's No!" Making your own Garlic Bread is cheap and easy (just how I like it). Also you can make it as good (little butter) or as bad (lots of garlic-no kissing for you!) as you like.

Cheap Chic's Garlic Bread

Ingredients

2 loaves of French bread
1-2 sticks of Butter
pressed garlic cloves (the more the better)
oregano (optional)

Half the loaves of bread. Soften the butter. Add the pressed garlic to the soften butter and mix. Slather the spread onto the French bread loaves. Sprinkle as much oregano on as desired. Broil in the oven till browned (about 5-7 minutes, but make sure to check it frequently! Broiling can lead to blackening quite quickly!).

Now you have a full 4-Course Liquid dinner: appetizers, soup, garlic bread and of course, alcoholic liquid.

And for dessert? Well, I always keep a box of cake or brownie mix (when it goes on sale for 99c) in the house (just in case). Just make sure you have enough eggs and oil handy. It even is a great party activity. Who doesn't love licking the spatula clean or spilt wine flavored brownies?

One final thought- Make sure you have enough toilet paper for when everyone breaks the seal. After all, this is a liquid dinner party!

Do Your Own Damn Laundry!

I'm not passing judgment on any New Yorker who supports the laundries and local economy of our fine City. However, stop whining about how much it costs to have someone else do your laundry (It's a typical New Yorker trait). It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it right? Well, let's talk economics.

On the one hand your time is money. However, your free time is suppose to be free, but if you work 16 hour days, then maybe your free time is for slipping all-night Diner food down your throat and sleeping off the vodka tonics, Mad Men style. But then you best be gettin' paid to have your laundry lifestyle where someone else toils over it.

For those of us who aren't as dashing as Don Draper and have a fair amount of free time, then doing our own laundry could save a bundle. For instance, top loading medium capacity washers can usually hold 7-8lbs of laundry. That's usually a little less or more than half of a standard laundry basket. Add a full basket and you have between 15-20lbs of laundry. At a dollar a lb (which is usually the standard in NYC, give or take 25c) that's around $20 a basket with detergent & folding included. The typical washer at a laundry mat (or in your own building) costs $2 and you supply your own detergent, dryer sheets and intuitive. Best of all, if anything comes out shrunk or covered in bleach, you have no one to blame, but yourself. For me to do a laundry basket costs $5.25 w/ detergent (which I recommend Arm & Hammer Dye & Perfume Free, $1 coupon at site). That's 75% off the price of having someone else do it and I burn calories walking up and down the stairs and folding. It's a win/win situation for me!

Now a lot of people have many excuses for not doing their own laundry, besides the time issue, I understand that (i.e. it's gross, it's boring, I'm lazy, etc...). But for those of you who want to venture out and need some encouragement, watch this clip from FRIENDS- The One with the East German Laundry Detergent.

1. Catch up with Mom, your bff, your ex, or your proctologist on your cell phone.
2. Start writing the great American Novel.
3. People watch.
4. Read one of the many great novels of British Literature.
5. Work on Monday's New York Times Crossword Puzzle or better yet, the TV Guide crossword.
6. Hit on someone or at least try to (I recommend Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog for guidance- Act 1)
7. Meditate
8. Read the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest (I once read an issue of People from 1972...it was 2005 at the time).
9. Knit or crochet.
10. Dream you're rich enough to have someone else do your damn laundry!

I gallivanted down to the store this morning, right around 11am in fact, just so I could make sure I would get the best browsing selection.

There were about five table tops filled with a mixture of books. From The Big Book of Breasts to The Book of Plants- The Complete Plates to History of Men's Magazines, Vol. 5 to Michelangelo, Complete Work, there was an interesting (and somewhat erotically focused- lots of photography books of naked women and sexual exploits) selection. The prices ranged from 99c to $99. Most books ranged around the $7.49 to $29. There was this beautiful tome on Da Vinci, but it weighed in at 25lbs and I believe it would break my coffee table (well, if I actually had one).

Anyway, it wasn't as fabulous as I expected, but it's worth a look if only to see people's reactions when they catch you browsing through a book full of muffs and puffs (and then slyly reach for said book when you are finished, buy it with downcast eyes and then scurry out the store).

Ode to RAMEN (recipe included)!

Yesterday morning as I was commuting, I picked up my daily AM New York (I like it better than the Metro. It's more pop-culturie- and yes, "pop-culturie" is a word. I just made it one.) and happened upon an article about the economy and ramen. It is the ultimate cheap meal ranging from 10c to 70c for a basic package. ("Gourmet" ramen can get as high as $4.50. At least that I've seen.)

Since, I am very, very impressionable, throughout my day, all I could think about was how I wanted Ramen. Hence, on the way home I picked up some Ramen. The article I read that morning gave recipes (I kid you not) on how to make gourmet Ramen with non-dehydrated ingredients. However, I just didn't have the energy to make the actual recipes, so instead I've complied a list for you of things that I like to add to my Ramen (and they're cheap!).

Bac-Os- faux bacon bits: Just what you need added to your Ramen- more salt, but these yummy little pieces of faux bacon made of soy are just soy delicious! (Okay, so maybe not as great as real bacon, but come on, I'm a vegetarian. I like to pretend.)
Scallions- they add mild onion-like flavor and some light greenery to your dish (Thus, making it seem good for you.) and are cheap! (I bought a bunch for 25c, tax included.)
Carrots- add some orange, get better vision (or night vision).
Plain Yogurt- to give your broth a little more depth. (And calicum-duh!)
Hot Sauce- to give it a little kick. Again tons of salt, tons of spice. (just how I like it!)

And as an added bonus, I decided to include my own Ramen Recipe....

Okra Chaat Masala Ramen

Start boiling water in a small sauce pan.
In a frying pan, lightly saute 1/4 of the bag of Okra in a little oil.
Boil the noodles in the sauce pan.
Add Chaat Masala Spice to the Okra and stir till fully coated and you can smell the ingredients mixing together.
Strain and place the ramen in a big bowl.
Add the Okra Chaat Masala on top the Ramen.
Add Scallions or Plain Yogurt to garnish.
Eat.
Repeat if you find it delicious and a bit sassalicious.

So basically my point is (did I have one to begin with) is that Ramen used as directed is for college. Ramen with a little somethin' extra is the grown-up version of something cheap and easy! As Mary says in 3 Men and a Little Lady (one of my fav movies from childhood), "Try it. You'll like it."

Thrift Store Shopping, Name Brands, Cheap Price!

A few weeks ago my coworker told me about the thrift stores on 23rd St (Thanks, Kirtley!). I was in desperate need for some new clothing, but I am on quite a tight budget. Thus, this weekend, I ventured to 23rd St (btwn Lexington and 1st Ave) to go find some treasures.

Boy, did I hit the jackpot!!!

First, I stopped by the Salvation Army.

In terms of thrift stores, it's not the cleanest or the most organized (except for the clothing). Also, if you walk in and are wondering where all the clothes are, they are 1 floor below in the dimly lit basement (and yes the only mode of transportation is a rickety elevator. Looking for the perfect location for a Horror film in NYC?). If you are willing to dig you might come up with some treasures (They did have a great selection of cowboy boots. However at $30 it was still out of my price range.). I did find this gorgeous, gray, GAP shift for work and at $6.99 (tax included) it is a great addition to my work wardrobe. The only major issue I had with the place, was the lack of dressing room. I wanted to try on more things, but I didn't really feel like showing the other shoppers my bright, red Super girl boyshorts.

The next stop was Goodwill Industries.

This store is like the Mecca of thrift stores in NYC. First, the store is bright (like fluorescent, Wal-mart lighting bright), big and well organized. Clothing is separated by color and type. I went straight to the sweaters. One of my first picks was a chic, black, Banana Republic sweater. Perfect for work or a first date: classic, but slightly salacious. At $9.99, it made the cut.

Next I headed over to the jeans. I think the final count for the number of jeans I tried on was 40 pairs. However, with over 100 jeans on the rack, it wasn't hard to pick a few out. Another great thing about this store- it HAS A DRESSING ROOM! And on a busy Saturday afternoon, there was never more than a 4 minute wait. I finally settled on 3 pairs, in excellent condition and all name brand: Gap, Express and Guess. At $7.99 a pair, you can't beat it!

Final total:

3 pairs of jeans, 1 sweater and 1 shift = $40.95
(which doesn't even cover the cost for one pair of jeans at the mall).

New Year, New Hair (on the cheap) PART 3

So the next morning (did you really believe I would cut my hair while drinking?), I did some research on my "side swept bangs." I recommend Chris Faircloth's Women's hairstyles instructions on Expert Village. His videos will show you how to cut a variety of women's hairstyles, although really I suggest practicing on a friend, not yourself.

I grabbed my sewing scissors, my smaller scissors from the 5th grade, a comb, some water and case things got too out of hand, some wine to calm myself down.

Thus I started cutting and a half an hour later.....

I looked like Lady Gaga, before she went blonde. Instead of stopping and leaving my hair alone (since I obviously didn't manage to pull off the side swept bangs), I thought the bangs were still a little off-centered.......

2 hours later....

I now look like Becca Moody from Californication. And, yes that is the 12 year old daughter of Hank Moody. And, yes that means I look like a 12 year old (well in real life, she's actually 15, but still I'm not even legal).

I'm still coming to terms with my new underage look, therefore, you'll have to give me some time before I reveal the look. Let me have some time to "age it up" a bit. Maybe go more Cleopatra than Goth Lolita.

New Year, New Hair (on the cheap) PART 2

So last night was the night that I decided to whip up some D.I.Y. action to become a celebrity (well, at least have celeb hair).

First I decided to get some celebrity inspiration for what I wanted- Enter the Internet and the hairstyle websites (http://www.hairpedia.com, http://www.hairstylesdesign.com).

Second, there were some conditions. No to Brook Hogan, Charlize Theron, or Paris Hilton. My hair has only been blonde once and I got sick of the drag queen comments. Also, since it is Winter, I should go darker in hair color and keep my hair longer.

After searching around the sites for a while, I remembered someone once said I looked like a mixture of Maggie Gyllenhaal and Alyson Hannigan (must be the quirkiness. Well, that or the pronounced chin). Therefore, I decide on an Alyson Hannigan style, which was Dark Brown with side swept bangs.

So now that I decided on my style, it was time for action. Enter the drug store. Oh, so convenient (down the block, real time saver) and oh so cheap for hair color (in a box at $7.58 with tax vs. at the salon, low end starting at $50 plus tax and tip). I decided on L'OREAL Paris ColorSpa Moisture Actif No. 12- Dark Brown. I've used this brand before and love it, because it is about 3 bucks less than most hair color and it is Non-Permanent color (for all us commitment-phobics out there. Plus if the color is abhorrent, in 28 hair washes its gone, whether over the course of a month or one very scour filled night.).

Then I gathered my supplies:

- hair color
- bottle of $6.99 Finca Flichman 2007 Malbec (the wine is the best part of hair coloring at home and it's still under $20 for a color and a few drinks! You can't beat it!).
- wine glass
- corkscrew
- iPod
- old towel

After reading all the instructions and drinking a glass of wine, I began....

Let's Take Manhattan, Free Museum Style....

I am like most New Yorkers in the fact that this City fascinates the heckaroonie out of me. I am constantly searching to learn more about this City and its people. There is, of course, the old fashioned way to learn about the City, this being by living here, breathing the air and interacting with the myraid of personalities (and they are quite diverse and encompass the good, the bad and the (unfortunately) ugly).

However, sometimes I just want to learn, but with less interaction with...well...the sights, the smells and the sounds (basically, the City proper). Ironically, it just so happens that the other day when I was on the Subway, I saw an advert for the Museum of the City of New York. Eureka!

That's right. Who knew we had our own Museum (well, at least I didn't). Best part is there is FREE ADMISSION EVERY SUNDAY from 10AM-12PM.

And, right now they have Exhibitions on Paris/New York: Design/Fashion/Culture/1925-1940 and Growing and Greening New York that I hear will knock your socks off!

So grab a date, friend, lover or an imaginary other and be a part of it- New York, New York!

New Year, New Hair (on the cheap) PART 1

If you have been following the gossip pages, the New Year always brings new hairstyles for the Celebs (did anyone see Heather Mills? Icky!).

As you can see my basic cut/color with my utter pasty-ness is great for looking like a coked-out celeb, but otherwise is fairly drab. Thus, being a pseudo-celeb Perez I need a new style, on the cheap of course!

I work in Midtown East. When I forget my lunch there aren't that many cheap lunch options. Most lunches around this area average in the $7-10 range, which racks up to about $35-50/week on lunch alone! Just not something I can afford (or really would want to spend my money on)!

Tomorrow starts another work week and the morning commute. This task can be quite irksome, especially since commuting means interacting with the human race (and for those of us in NYC, the MTA).

Nothing drowns out the sounds of the hustle and bustle than that Ken Follett thriller, Nora Roberts swashbuckling romance or the latest New York Times bestseller (I prefer paperback myself).

If you actually want to drown out the sounds, most libraries have a wide selection of CDs that you can rip to your computer and download to your iPod. My current favorite is Bret Michaels' solo album (yes, he made a solo album and yes, it is quite delectably bad).

So go to your nearest library and sign up for a card. It takes about 5 minutes, is free and is the Cheap Chic's option for staying sane while commuting (without breaking the bank). Most libraries also have DVD collections, so you can secretly watch The Love Guru from the privacy of your own home and not have spend a dime by renting it (Trust me, it would be sorry with your investment).

In NYC, there are three main library systems: the New York Public Library (otherwise known as the NYPL), the Brooklyn Public Library and the Queens Borough Public Library. With over 50 million items in circulation (NYPL), I'm sure you will be able to find something that would tickle your fancy.

All these systems have websites and online catalogs where you can look up their entire collections and place things on hold (Currently, I'm waiting on The House Bunny to come in! Oh my!).

So go online, find your nearest library branch, and get that card!

'Cheap Vodka to Top Shelf' Myth BUSTED!

I was watching an old episode of MythBusters, one of my Cablecrack shows (because it's so addicting) and they were trying to debunk the adage that if you buy cheap Vodka, you can distill it (through a Brita filter) to make it taste like top shelf Vodka.

Well guess what?

YOU CAN'T!

So don't waste your money on cheap Vodka. It's not worth the money you spend on useless filters, aspirin, and greasy food to get rid of the inevitable hangover the next morning.

Calendars: The Cheap Chic's Decorations!

So, I will admit it. I have a major printed paper fetish. Whether a postcard, a greeting card, a calendar or an advert, I am usually quite intrigued. My walls are festooned with all of these things, a lifelong collection of postcards with waiters racing trays of drinks through the streets of Paris, calendars with sassalicious phrases on them ("She liked her men like her cocktails...neat, but with a twist) and cards denoting love, life and liquor (these are a few of my favorite things).

One of my favorite times of year is the New Year. The Cheap Chic loves the New Year, because it means find a new use for the old and bring in with the new.

Thus, don't throw away those old calendars! They make great wall hangings. If you are like me you liked your calendar and anxiously awaited the next month to see what intriguing salacious quote set the tone for the month. Now that its the new year- deconstruct it. Take all those months and tape them up on the wall as artwork as a modge podge, cheap chic collage. Or if you are anal, take a few calendar months and find cheap frames (check the dollar store, Joanns or Michaels) and frame them up!

Also, the New Year brings new Calendars and guess what? They are CHEAP! That's right, the New Year brings the 50-75% off Calendar sales all over (and I'm not talking about the dollar store Cat calendar your Great Aunt gets you every year). These are the beautifully printed, glossy paper, and fabulous artwork variety. For the price, why not buy one as a calendar and another as more decorations for your bachelor/bachelorette pad! For the price of 1 you get 2 or 3!

So raid your local B&N, Borders or discount store.

and particularly my love for 3 Buck Chuck as we fondly refer to it in New York City which costs $3, is produced by Charles Shaw Winery (hence the name) and bottled exclusively for Trader Joe's.

The 3 Buck Chuck brand is known for its consistency in flavor and accessibility the masses, whether, a budget conscious wine connoisseur or a wannabe posh college student trying to look sophisticated at the local Frat. However, in essence, really these wines are about drinkability, especially when most wines at this price point taste like vinegar with funky undertones.

The only downfall to this wine, is its location to me. If I live in California it would only be $2 and in NYC the only Trader Joe's is right by Union Square/14th St and a trip for me. However with Trader Joes offers a handy 6 Bottle Reusable/Eco-friendly Wine bag for the Cheap price of 99c.

This guide is not for anyone who is looking to keep up with the Joneses. Frankly, I don't know who the proverbial "Joneses" are nor would I care to spend my hard earned wages (or eventual lottery winnings) on a $1,000 handbag and Botox for my Shitzu.

This guide is for those looking for richness, in terms of life fulfillment (and maybe a bit more honestly....in knowing that anything the Joneses can do, you can do better, and quite unadbashedly cheaper).

I'll leave with you two things:

First with this recommendation. Pick up this book at your local library or hell splurge on buying it at your local Strand or bookstore (remember you are not only supporting actual tactual publishing (death to the Kindle!), but the author as well).....Prosperity Pie: How to Relax About Money and Everything Else by SARK.
